Education Program

  • Summer schools. The Data Sciences Summer School, in conjunction with the LANL Mathematical Modeling and Analysis group and our partner universities, will be offering 10-15 positions this summer in Los Alamos, NM. Students will work - often in interdisciplinary teams - on projects requiring a broad range of state-of-the-art mathematical, computational and statistical techniques. All projects will closely couple theory and practice, involving active implementation of solutions to problems. See 2007 Summer School.
  • Workshops. DDMA periodically runs intensive, problem driven workshops to bring together the expertise of the team on a particular data set or technical challenge. Our students are actively involved and work side-by-side with leaders in the field.
  • Postdocs. We currently support 4 post-docs through the High Performance Computing and Mathematical Modeling and Analysis Groups at LANL and one post-doc through the University of Michigan. We hope to be able to increase support for post-docs through co-mentorship arrangements with our University partners.
  • Graduate students. We currently support 3 graduate students working on joint thesis efforts with LANL staff. We are looking for funding for at least one additional position. We are a working on a partnership with NSF and UCLA in VIGRE program. Our longer-term goal is to establish an NSF-sponsored IGERT program (Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship), helping to attract top students and leading faculty.
  • Courses. We bring relevant courses taught by DOE Laboratory scientists and by Center postdocs and University partners to the community. Currently we are running a class on Geometric Measure Theory
  • Undergraduate research We work extensively with UCLA's IPAM summer RIPS program, involving undergraduates with extraordinary mathematical abilities in industry projects.
