Allon Percus - DDMA Lead

DDMA has been collaborating with the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) at UCLA through many avenues over many years.

Several DDMA team members participate actively in supporting undergraduate research in LANL projects through IPAM's Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS)" program, involving undergraduates with extraordinary mathematical abilities in industry projects.

Allon Percus served as IPAM's Associate Director from 2003 to 2006.

Currently, Kevin Vixie is a Senior Fellow at the IPAM Random Shapes program.

Opportunities:

Proposed Activities:

  • Workshops & summer schools, jointly with IPAM and other centers/institutes. Topics: searching image space, opinion dynamics, local computation on distributed networks, neuroeconomics, automated image analysis, measuring influence.
  • Postdocs. Support for 3 postdocs each year, with LANL/UCLA co-mentorship arrangement.
  • Graduate students. 6 summer internships at LANL each year, leading to joint thesis opportunities. Partnership with NSF in VIGRE program. Longer-term goal of establishing NSF-sponsored IGERT program (Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship), helping to attract top students and leading faculty.
  • New courses taught by DOE Laboratory scientists and by Center postdocs, using a combination of physical presence and videoconferencing that has proven successful for other LANL Institutes. Topics: radiographic data analysis, hyperspectral imaging, knowledge extraction from text, statistical physics of networks, adaptive learning, tracking turbulence from video images, urban visualization and simulation, agent-based social modeling.
